“Healthy eating is a way of life, so it’s important to establish routines that are simple, realistically, and ultimately livable.” – Horace

A healthy choice option for a snack or a mini meal; energy bars are supplement bars that are a convenient source of micronutrients. They come in a wide variety of flavours. Shops bought bars are often fortified with vitamins and minerals but can also be high in sugar, fructose, sucrose, fillers and/or corn syrup; and like many foods, not all energy bars are created equal.
Where did the modern energy bar come from?
The modern energy bar was developed by NASA as a “fresh; tasty and nutritious” solution meal replacement for their astronauts. The bar was made so that an astronaut can easily eat it in space without taking off their helmet. It was labelled “space food stick” and marketed as a “non-frozen balanced nutrition snack in rod form containing nutritionally balanced amounts of carbohydrate, fat, and protein.” The bar came in orange, mint and peanut butter flavours.
Fast forward a few years and the NASA nutrition bar had reinvented itself as a go to, high energy source convenient snack for the aspiring athlete and bodybuilder. This convenient snack by the 80’s became a trusted source of protein for bodybuilders. Dieters quickly caught on and started using them as regular part of many protein replacement diets.
Today, the term nutrition bar and energy bar is used interchangeably. There are nutrition bars for all tastes and diets. Generally speaking; there are four types of nutrition bars: meal-replacement bars, protein bars, fibre bars and whole food bars.
Meal replacement bars are used as substitute to solid food. They aim to have enough macronutrients (fats, carbohydrates, protein and fibre) and micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) to supply all your nutritional needs per meal.
Protein bars are used as healthy snacks alternative when on-the-go to increase protein intake above all else. These are generally intended for athletes’ whose bodies may require more protein for muscle building than they can easily get in a regular meal. The bars will contain one or more sources of protein such as whey, casein or soy. Although different types of protein have their own pros and cons, most bars are formulated to give maximum benefits to the widest range of body types.
Fibre bars are meant for people who need to get more fibre in their diet, generally people later in life, who don’t want to eat things like bran muffins or fibrous cereals. They are often combined with fruit.
Whole food bars, relatively new on the market, are quickly becoming one of the most popular types of nutrition bars. Whole food bars are usually raw and not processed.
